  • Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

After going out a few times, he finally persuaded her to come to his apartment to watch a movie together. Of course the movie was   just   a simple excuse. In reality, that night was “the night”. Well, it almost was. They were on the sofa watching a chick flick when…

“Your cell phone is ringing,” she said.

“I know,” he replied.

“Aren’t you going to take that call?”

“No, I don’t care,” he asserted.

“Are you sure?”

“I am positive.”

After a while, the phone stopped ringing, so they continued watching the film.

“Aren’t you going to check if they left a message?” she inquired.

“No.”

“What if it’s an emergency?”

“No messages, see? If it had been an emergency, they would have left one.”

“True story.”

After a few minutes, his cell phone started ringing again…

“Who is calling you on a Saturday night?” she enquired.

“I don’t have the faintest idea.”

“Are you seeing someone else?” she asked suspiciously.

“No, I am not.”

“Then you should take that call. Otherwise, I won’t believe you.”

“Ok, I will prove it to you. ”

He finally reached his cell phone which was on the floor…

“Hello?”

“Hi, I am your neighbor from downstairs.”

“Oh, hi!”

“ Hi. I am sorry to bother you on a Saturday night. But this is kind of an emergency.”

“What happened? Are you okay?”

“I am okay but… my refrigerator is not!”

“Your refrigerator?”

“Yes, it has just stopped working. And I have just made a big purchase at the supermarket. I need to use yours until Monday, can I? Monday morning, I will call a repair service to come and fix it… but in the meantime… can I use yours?”

“Sure. It’s kind of difficult to find one on a Saturday night.”

“Are you in the building?”

“Yep. Please come in the next twenty minutes.”

“Ok. Thanks in advance.”

So she gathered all her shopping bags and headed to her neighbor’s apartment and she knocked at his door. He opened the door… she came in.

“Thank you so much for your help. I owe you one!”

“No problem!”

“Hey if some time your fridge breaks down… you can use mine.”

“Thanks.”

Right at that moment, his date comes to the kitchen and introduces herself.

“Hi. My name’s Jane.”

“Hi, I am Mary,” his neighbor replied.”

“I don’t wish to intrude, but we were watching a movie when you came.”

“Aren’t you sweet, Jane? That is very kind of you. What movie are you watching?”

“What I actually meant is…”

“I bought some candy bars at the supermarket. Let’s open some of them while we watch the film together”

Jane wasn’t happy about it, but Mary misread that sign.

“Can I talk to you in private?” Jane asked her date.

“What’s the matter?”

“Why are you letting her stay? Tonight’s our night!”

“But she is nice. And she brought some candy.”

“I cannot believe you!”

“I like that candy…”

“Are you choosing some candy bars over me???”

“Well…”

The couple was having a little fall out and Jane stormed out. Meanwhile, Mary went to the living room and sat in the middle of the couch. Her neighbor joined her and enjoyed the film and the candy.

“What happened to your date?”

“Well, she left…”

“Why did she invite me to join you, guys then?”

“Well actually… she thought …”

“What?”

“She thought something is going on between you and me.”

“No kidding!! Hahahaha. Why didn’t you ask me to leave?”

“ I was gonna, but then she flipped out and I preferred to let her go! ”

“Well she seemed to be a bit freaky…”

“Yeah…”

“Oh, I see. Anyway, if you call her, tell her I am sorry. And please ask her if she knows of a good refrigerator repair service.”
