Nutrition is coming out of sickness. The sore throat is clearing up and it is not hacking up phlegm. This is the first of many conversations on what is going in in the news and some things that we have heard about. (Remember the high fructose corn syrup commercials? ) Today is the rise of a new revolution on what to eat and if the healthy stuff is really healthy. We have tampered with the nature of food so much that many people are not even calling it food but “food products.” I am going to break down the confusion and the alphabet soup of what is going on with food, nutrition and the news.
What is HFCS and GMO?
Let’s begin with the basics:
HFCS= High fructose corn syrup. This is actually a by-product of corn that was created to increase sweetness. According to the commercial that was plastered over the TV a few years back there was statement about this ingredient being okay in moderation. Many health professional ask the question of, “How do you know what has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it?” Given in moderation- moderation meaning once a month and only in a small or medium sized popsicle but many of our foods such as salad dressings, soda, hot sauce, soups, creamers, candies, tartar sauce and even barbecue sauce (mmm, BBQ sauce!) contain this product. The CRA ( corn refiners association) has created a new tricky names for this such as HFCS-90 meaning it contains 90 precent of pure fructose. The other names include:
- Fructose syrup
- Isoglucose syrup
- Maize syrup
- Tapioca syrup
- Glucose syrup
- Basically any except Sugar or Cane sugar
High Fructose Corn Syrup has been linked to numerous illnesses with the most popular being obesity and diabetes mellitus type II.
GMO= Genetically Modified Organism. A plant that has been genetically altered from its original state. There was once an experiment in which a tomato plant was illuminated because scientists spliced genes from a firefly and added to a tobacco plant. Science had tampered with nature and many are not too pleased about it.
