Beyond the Ceramide Trend: CITTA Rethinks Barrier Care for Indian Skin

CITTA, the Pune-based skincare brand built on the philosophy of “Modern Science. Indian Soul.”, has launched its Ceramides & White Tea Moisturizer, a dermatologist-tested barrier-repair formula developed specifically around the realities of Indian skin and Indian climates such as hard water, high humidity, pollution, and extreme UV exposure.

Most barrier moisturizers are built around a fairly universal idea of what barrier damage looks like, the redness, dryness, sensitivity, irritation. But Indian skin doesn’t always show barrier damage the same way. Because Indian skin typically has more melanin, inflammation is often followed by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Meaning barrier damage can show up not just as redness or sensitivity, but also as dark marks, dullness, and unevenness.

On a daily basis, Indian skin is exposed to a combination of stressors that wear down the skin barrier over time. Pollution exposure breaks down the skin’s protective lipid layer, while everyday stress slows the skin’s natural repair process and increases moisture loss. India’s hard water compounds this further, typically running at a highly alkaline pH of 7.8 to 8.5 and spiking as high as 9.0, it strips natural oils and weakens the skin barrier even with normal face washing.

With so many factors working against them, Indians need products with ceramides. However, most barrier creams sold in India are formulated for colder, drier climates and lean heavily on occlusive, heavy textures. In India’s humidity, that approach often backfires as people find the product greasy and do not use it consistently. Understanding people’s unique needs, CITTA built this moisturizer to address this specific mismatch: a lightweight, non-greasy, hydrating formula that repairs the skin barrier and hydrates without clogging pores, designed to fit into a daily routine.

The Formula

A healthy skin barrier isn’t made of ceramides alone. Its lipid matrix relies on ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids working together. Instead of formulating another moisturizer that simply “contains ceramides,” CITTA uses the complete barrier-lipid system: the 5 Ceramides Complex (Ceramide EOP, NS, NP, AS, AP), Cholesterol, and Hydrogenated Lecithin, in an optimized ratio to support the skin’s natural barrier structure and repair process. Humectants including Glycerin and Xylitylglucoside draw and retain water, helping reduce transepidermal water loss and keeping compromised skin hydrated while the barrier recovers.

For Indian skin, repairing the barrier is only the beginning. Post-inflammation triggers excess melanin production, leaving pigmentation behind even after the original irritation has subsided. The formula includes ingredients like White Tea, Niacinamide, Papaya, Thanaka, Bengkoang, and Pomegranate. Actives that brighten and soothe the skin while supporting barrier repair, without turning the product into an aggressive treatment that further stresses already compromised skin.

Traditional barrier moisturizers tend to be thick, rich, and occlusive-heavy, which can be uncomfortable in Indian weather, with humidity, sweat, and pollution, particularly for oily, combination, or acne-prone skin. CITTA’s texture was deliberately built to be lightweight, hydrating, and comfortable for everyday Indian weather, while still delivering the lipid and hydration support expected of a barrier moisturizer.

Why It Was Built This Way

CITTA’s CEO & Co-founder Akanksha Sharma said, “The formulation isn’t Indian because we added an Indian ingredient or an Indian story on the packaging. It’s Indian because every decision, from the brightening support to the lightweight texture to the complete barrier-lipid system, starts with how Indian skin actually behaves. We designed the ceramide moisturizer this way so it repairs a damaged barrier while also addressing how barrier damage actually shows up, feels, and behaves on Indian skin. Or as I always say for all our products, thoughtfully crafted for Indian skin.”

Monisha Sharma, Cosmetics Engineer & Co-founder, CITTA stated, “Good skincare starts with understanding people before ingredients. So instead of assuming research done in the West would translate directly to Indian skin, we study our own ecosystem first, the water quality, humidity, sun exposure, everyday habits, etc, before we touch formulation. It’s a slower way to build, but it means every product we create is made for what Indian skin actually needs.”
