In India, the valor and sacrifice of our soldiers are honored nationwide, yet the journeys of their wives—Veernaris—often remain unseen. These “brave women,” as their name suggests, are the silent pillars of strength, enduring profound loss while taking on new challenges. The Veernari Shakti Resettlement Foundation, established to uplift and empower these women, strives to recognize their resilience and support them in meaningful ways.
Who Are the Veernaris?
Veernaris are the widows of soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. Many of these women are young and come from rural or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, facing immense responsibilities post-loss—raising children, managing finances, and overcoming societal obstacles. Limited educational opportunities and modest pensions, often insufficient to meet basic needs, add to their challenges.
According to government data, India has the highest population of soldier widows globally, with over 680,000 Veernaris. Each year, an additional 1,200–1,600 soldiers make the ultimate sacrifice, with the average martyrdom age falling between 22 and 32, leaving their widows between 18 and 27. Resuming an independent life is difficult for these young women, who often have limited education, usually up to the 10th grade. Further, typical pensions of ₹10,500-₹15,500 per month make financial and psychological support essential for a dignified life.
The Mission of Veernari Shakti Resettlement Foundation
Led by founder Mr. Prashant Tewari, the foundation offers comprehensive support to Veernaris, enabling them to reclaim their independence through financial assistance, vocational training, and emotional support. The foundation’s mission is to ease their burden and equip them for empowered, self-sustaining lives.
- Financial Assistance: The foundation provides monetary support to reduce financial stress, allowing Veernaris to invest in their children’s education and manage household expenses.
- Vocational Training: Training programs equip Veernaris with employable skills, including tailoring, computer literacy, and small business management, fostering sustainable livelihoods and self-confidence.
- Emotional and Community Support: Recognizing the emotional toll of their loss, the foundation provides grief counseling and connects Veernaris with others in similar circumstances, building a supportive community.
The Visionary Leadership of Mr. Prashant Tewari
A prominent advocate for social welfare, Mr. Prashant Tewari was inspired by his father, Major (Late) Bhupendra Shankar Tewari, a war-disabled officer who served in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. Although Mr. Tewari aspired to join the army, he redirected his dedication toward supporting soldiers’ families through the Veernari Shakti Resettlement Foundation, which he founded in 2016.
Skill Development and Empowerment Initiatives
The foundation’s comprehensive programs range from vocational training to legal counseling, all aimed at fostering economic independence for Veernaris. In 2023, it launched a Drone Pilot License Training Course, a pioneering initiative by an NGO in India, opening new career paths in a growing field.
Support for the Next Generation
Mr. Tewari’s vision includes educational support for the children of martyrs, especially girls facing societal challenges. The foundation offers scholarships, career counseling, and online learning resources, helping ensure a bright future for the children of fallen heroes.
Community-Driven Impact and Success Stories
Veernari Shakti relies on community involvement, donations, and partnerships to expand its reach. Platforms like Donatekart help connect the organization with compassionate individuals across India who wish to contribute to this mission. These donations support empowerment programs, enabling more Veernaris to benefit from these essential services.
One inspiring success story from the foundation is the transformation of a widow from a small village in Rajasthan. Through vocational training, she was able to start her own small business making handcrafted items, which she now sells online, achieving a life of hope and self-sufficiency.
